Penis enlargement procedures (sometimes euphemistically referred to as male enhancement procedures in spam email and television advertisements) are techniques alleged to make the human penis larger. These procedures range from manual exercises to devices and medical interventions, with reports of successes and failures around the world, and while some are known to be hoaxes, there is no popularly known scientific proof about their effectiveness in general.

Surgical techniques used for penis lengthening (enhancement phalloplasty) and penis widening (girth enhancement) have been in the urologic literature for many years. In a study conducted at St. Peter's Andrology Centre and Institute of Urology in London, it was determined that most patients who underwent penis-lengthening surgery were unsatisfied with the results.[1] (September 2006).
Approximately one-third to one-half of the penis is inside the body, and is internally attached to the undersurface of the pubic bone. Penis lengthening involves the release of the fundiform ligament and the suspensory ligament that attaches the two erectile bodies to the pubic bone (ligamentolysis). The suspensory ligament makes the penis arch under the pubic bone. Release of this ligament allows the penis to protrude on a straighter path, further outward to give a longer physical appearance.[citation needed] With the penis on stretch, the ligament is divided close to the pubic bone until all midline attachments have been freed. Once these ligaments have been cut, part of the penile shaft (usually held within the body) drops forward and extends out, enlarging the penis by 2-3cm (0.78-1.18 in.). After surgery, part of the postoperative treatment includes stretching of the penis to prevent the severed suspensory ligament from healing shorter than it was previously. The article "Penile Suspensory Ligament Division for Penile Augmentation: Indications and Results" discussed the subject.[2] According to Nim Christopher, a urologist at St. Peter's Andrology Center in London, among men who have had the surgery, "the dissatisfaction rate was in excess of 70 percent".
Real penile lengthening (i.e., lengthening of corporal bodies vs. ligamentolysis) is not a routine and safe procedure because of high risk of losing the ability to have an erection. It can be done safely only in patients with erectile dysfunction or Mb Peyronies concomitantly with implantation of penile prosthesis. The world's leading urologists specializing in the field of penis enlargement surgery use only ligamentolysis, liposuction of the pubic area, and skin redistribution. They state clearly that surgeons can only expose the penis more outside the body with especially visible results in obese patients and ones with different deformities of penile skin where the penis is layered.
As a result penile surgery is strongly discouraged in all patients with normal, functional penises. Such individuals should not engage in penile enlargement surgery, in addition such a surgery is encouraged only for men born with a congenital abnormality, who have suffered an injury, or who have severe erectile dysfunction.[citation needed]
A further method is to replace the two corpora cavernosa with inflatable penile implants. This is performed primarily as a therapeutic surgery for men suffering from complete impotence; an implanted pump in the groin or scrotum can be manipulated by hand to fill these cylinders from an implanted reservoir in order to achieve an erection. The replacement cylinders are normally sized to be direct replacements for the corpus cavernosa, but larger ones can be implanted.
One advantage to this surgery is that an erection can be created whenever desired, for as long as is desired and as firm as desired. However, this surgical procedure can never be reversed.
No scientific research supports the use of any nonsurgical method to enlarge the penis, and no reputable medical society endorses penis-enlargement surgery performed for purely cosmetic reasons.[3]
Rather than attempt to change the actual size of the penis, one may make it appear bigger, by trimming the pubic hair or by losing weight, or by applying on the penis an adult lotion for men containing Arginine. "In highly vascularized tissues such as lips, gums, genitalia, etc, vasodilatation leads to transient, reversible increases in tissue mass and sensitivity. A method for enhancing vasodilatation in these tissues would therefore lead to a tissue with enlarged appearance for the duration of vasodilatation. "[2]
"Penis enlargement pills", "penis patches" or ointments are commonly offered over the Internet. This is one of the most common topics for spam email messages. Analyses performed by Flora Research of California and by the University of Maryland have uncovered harmful contaminants in a number of "penis enlargement" pills. Contaminants found included mold, yeast, dangerous E. coli bacteria, pesticides, and lead.[4] Dr. Michael Donnenberg of the University of Maryland has described herbal pills marketed as having "heavy fecal contamination", possibly from animals grazing near the plants harvested for herbal ingredients.[5]
In discussing a typical "male enhancement" pill, Dr. Ira Sharlip, a spokesman for the American Urological Association, said "There is no such thing as a penis pill that works. These are all things that are sold for profit. There's no science or substance behind them."[6]
A penis pump is a cylinder that is fitted over the penis, with a manual or motorized pump to create suction. As the apparatus creates a vacuum around the penis, blood is drawn into the penis, helping it to become engorged. As vacuum increases, the difference between the inner blood-pressure and the pump pressure increases as well; excessive pressure causes vascular damage rather than a harder penis.
Penis pumps, usually described in this context as vacuum pumps, have use in conventional treatment of impotence. The pump itself is essentially as described above, although often made to higher standards of quality with a much higher price, and arrangements for distribution by suppliers of medical equipment.
Flexible compression rings, commonly called cock rings, can be added. Fitted on the open end of the cylinder, then an erection is created by pumping. Then the rings are pushed by hand onto the base of the erect penis before releasing the vacuum. This restricts blood flow, enabling the erection to be held even in the presence of problems of the vascular or nervous system which would otherwise lead to immediate loss of erection. In the best circumstances erections can be maintained for a considerable time, but manufacturers' literature recommends that, for safety, rings should be removed after no more than 30 minutes.
Pumping must be done very carefully to avoid injury. Over-enthusiastic pumping can burst blood vessels and form blisters. In some cases the testicles can be unexpectedly pulled into the cylinder and cause severe pain and injury.[citation needed] It is also believed that the rim of the cylinder can cut into the skin and over time cause damage to the ligaments surrounding the penis. Impatiently pumping without reading explanatory material can produce too much suction (any pressure lower than 10 torr/1,333 Pa)[citation needed] and cause permanent injury. Attempts at using vacuum cleaner units for this purpose have resulted in severe injury as the machine produces far too much suction. However, scientists Graham Rutherford and Anne Henke have also undertaken significant research in this area, being funded by some of the major names in sexual pleasure toys, such as Ann Summers. Mild pumping has led to the strengthening of penis muscles and also, for psychosomatic reasons, has led to decreased masturbatory rates in later life.[7]
The effectiveness of penis pumps was examined by Kazem, Hosseini and Alizadeh. They studied 37 men with penis length less than 10 cm and found no significant change in penile length after using pumps for six months, although the follow-up have found 30% satisfaction with the method. [8]

Jelqing is a method intended to enlarge the penis by exercising the smooth muscle and other tissues in the penis, with the goal of permanently increasing the maximum erect size of the penis. This technique, also called "milking", involves wrapping the thumb and index finger around the penis while semi-erect and repeatedly drawing them away from one's body to force blood into the glans, thus encouraging more vascularity in the corpus cavernosa and associated tissues. There is no scientific evidence that this technique actually works.
Risks that exist from this exercise are: burst blood vessels, sometimes causing bleeding from the urethra (which can lead to infection and other complications if not taken care of), and temporary or even permanent erectile dysfunction.
There are many products (tools, instructions, etc.) that one can buy; however, much of what they offer (instructions) is available on forums and free websites.
Jelqing is typically preceded by a warm-up with a hot compress on the genitals, and concluded the same way. The reasoning behind the 'warm-up' mimics the normal operation of the biological processes of the penis during the four stages of arousal. The third stage is heat. At this stage the smooth muscles of the 'glans' can easily expand to their present (not future) greatest potential size.
Clamping is a technique that uses a constricting device, such as a shoe string, cable clamp, or a tight cock ring. The clamp is firmly tied, clamped, or put, respectively, on the base of the erect penis while "edgeing" (extended masturbation) with a firmly erect penis. Extreme caution should be used to prevent permanent damage to the tissue. Use of a metal cock ring is not advised because trapped blood engorging the penis can make it impossible to remove.[citation needed]
Stretching consists of attaching a penis stretcher or "extender" device to the penis for set periods of time. The device exerts a constant traction on the penis, which, in theory, lengthens and widens the penis. The traction supposedly causes the cells in the penis to "split" and then reform and expand. In 2002 a study published in the International Journal of Impotence Research concluded that penis extender devices are effective at elongating the penis and furthermore the increases in length correlate with the amount of time the device is worn. [9] A similar study conducted by Paolo Gontero of the University of Turin was published in 2009 in the British Journal of Urology [10]
Hanging is perhaps the oldest self-applied method of penis enlargement, with evidence suggesting it was practiced by certain African tribes as long as 2,000 years ago. Weight hanging consists of attaching a device (usually a rope or a strap) that grips the glans or just behind the glans and allows a weight to be suspended for a specific amount of time. Then a conscious effort is made to exercise the penis by raising the weight in repetitions (lasting no more than 5 to 10 minutes at a time) starting with the smallest and lightest weight 1/16 pound to the heaviest usually 1/4 pound or more, to increase the strength and stamina as well as elongation of the penis.
One must be completely healed after circumcision before attempting hanging. Weight hanging, however, can also carry serious risks, which include nerve damage, chronic pain, scarring and impotence. The potential of these risk is dramatically increased if the patient is not directly trained by a qualified Certified Therapist. The idea behind weight hanging is to stretch the Tunica Albuginea and other various tissues of the penis. The general effect is to elongate the penis, although widening can also occur.
Hanging carries additional health risks due to the restriction of blood flow to the glans, including possible erectile disfunction. Tribes with male practitioners of weight hanging, usually results in the men being impotent, although urine is still able to pass through.
The butterfly vibrator is a clitoral sex toy featuring a vibrator body in the shape of a butterfly and straps attached to it for wearing on the waist and thighs.[1] The name of the vibrator was taken from the shape of a butterfly with wings providing the stimulation of clitoris and labia.
Butterfly style has become a quite popular sex toy design, since the shape of a butterfly allows the stimulation of the entire area of the female genitalia. Other designs, such as birds, flowers, and dolphins, have the same function.
Butterfly strap-on vibrators can be divided into several main groups:
Butterfly vibrators are made from the normal sex toys materials: silicone, latex, jelly, plastic and some other.
An artificial vagina is a device designed to simulate the female sex organ. To achieve this, it will generally be made of a soft material, lubricated, and sometimes heated. It may be designed for medical research purposes, animal breeding, or as a sex toy for erotic stimulation.
Contents |
Artificial vaginas are widely used by farms in cattle artificial insemination programs and semen collection centers for collecting animal sperm and its further application. An artificial vagina designed for collecting semen will imitate some or all of the anatomical features and behaviours of an animal's vagina.
There are several types of collecting apparatus, but the general design uses a tube with a normally sterile inner liner and hard outer shell. The walls of the tube may be hollow and filled with warm water to mimic a natural body temperature for better results, and may contain a filter to separate the semen.
An artificial vagina or Vibrating Pussy for the purposes of sexual stimulation is essentially an aid to masturbation: it is designed to simulate the sensation of sexual intercourse on the erect penis. It will often have moving parts such as vibrators that increase stimulation rather than accurately simulating a woman's vagina.
Usually the artificial vagina has a realistic or close to realistic appearance with a sleeve, where the penis can be inserted. The sleeve, or as it is also called "vaginal tunnel", measures in average from 10 to 20 centimetres (4 to 8 inches) and can have an open end for inserting vibrating bullet, if the user wishes.
Realistic: This type of artificial vagina is modeled on female genitals. For the advertising purposes many manufacturers design the vagina like the exact replica of some famous pornographic actress's vagina. Realistic vaginas are made to simulate the natural physiology: pubic bones, hairs, labia, all natural creases and dimples, etc.
Several realistic vaginas are manufactured with a narrower anal orifice for those users who also like to simulate anal sex. Though the natural vagina does not include any nubs and ribs inside the tunnel, manufacturers often add them into artificial vaginas for enhancing pleasure.
In Japan, onacups are popular "realistic" artificial vaginae that simulate various sex acts and come with lubricant already inside.
Vibrating: These artificial vaginas superficially resemble the previous one, but they have the added feature a vibrating element—usually a removable vibrating bullet that can be easily inserted into a hole into the bottom or the end of the sleeve. For more intensive sensations there are a variety of functions: vibrating, pulsating, surging, multi-speed, etc.
Vibrating bullets are usually controlled by a panel connected by a wire. Some kinds of vibrating artificial vagina are designed to create a sucking effect, replicating the role of a penis pump—with a bulb squeezed by the user.
In prison slang, a "fifi" refers to an artificial vagina or a Vibrating Pussy usually made by rolling a trash bag or condom inside of a towel, and using some sort of lubrication such as hand lotion.[1]
The artificial vagina as a sex toy is designed from the materials that maximally imitate the natural skin. The materials used in manufacturing artificial vaginas are stretchable and elastic for accommodating any penis size.
The elastic properties of all materials that are used in manufacturing artificial vaginas are combined with a porous nature and therefore vaginas require special care to avoid bacterial accumulation. Manufacturers recommend protecting them by applying a condom during use.
A cock ring or cockring is a ring that is placed around a man's penis, usually at the base, primarily to slow the flow of blood from the erect penile tissue, thus maintaining erection for a longer period of time. Cock rings can be worn around just the penis or penis and scrotum, or just the scrotum alone, though this is usually designated as a testicle cuff. Rings can be made of a variety of different materials, most commonly leather, rubber, or silicone, though nylon and metal are also used either as the main component or part of the closure. The term cock ring is sometimes used as a synonym for a Prince Albert piercing, a piercing of the penis that is usually, though not always, a metal ring.

A man may wear a cock ring because he has erectile dysfunction (ED), erectile hyperfunction, or otherwise wants to prolong erection because he likes the particular sensation of tightness and extreme engorgement that wearing one provides. It can be worn as a sex toy, as jewelry, or simply for the appearance. When used for ED, a vacuum pump is used to produce an erection in spite of vascular or nerve damage, and the ring slid off the pump's cylinder onto the base of the penis to maintain the erection.
Some men enjoy using cock rings for masturbation, as wearing of this sex toy contributes to better erection and delays orgasm, thus it intensifies orgasmic sensations. Also vibrating cock rings deliver a great range of very pleasurable vibrations that enhance enjoyment.
Some models include a protruding clitoral stimulator, designed to tickle the clitoris, vulva, or anus during sex. Others, such as the Vibrating ring, vibrate, either vibrating the ring itself, or in a popular 'Dolphin' variant using two removable bullet vibrators to provide stimulation to the testicles and clitoris. Some cock rings have vibrators attached that can be worn to stimulate the scrotum or perineum or a partner during sexual intercourse. Many women find that rings with vibrator attachments provide clitoral stimulation that is needed for achieving orgasm. Cock ring users should keep in mind that any pain, discomfort, or feeling of coldness in genitals is a signal to take the cock ring off.
Another variation is an inflatable cock ring for added control of adjustment.
A triple cock ring or triple crown is a cock ring that has additional rings for restraining the testicles. In orgasm, the testicles usually retract towards the body before ejaculation. A triple crown changes and intensifies the sensation of orgasm by forcing the testicles to stay away from the body.
Cock rings that are too tight, or worn for too long can be dangerous: this may cause priapism, a medical emergency that, if not treated promptly, can result in severe and permanent damage, including penile gangrene that can result in the destruction and possible amputation of the penis. Rings for erectile dysfunction are invariably supplied with the instruction that they should not be left on for more than thirty minutes. Falling asleep with a ring on is a particular danger. This may lead to temporary or permanent nerve damage. Numbness in the glans penis, penis becoming cold or penis becoming white may be signs that a cock ring has been worn for too long and medical advice should be sought.
Elastic, stretchy, cock rings are removed by stretching them and pulling them off the penis, over the head, which can be difficult. Others have a quick-release mechanism allowing them to be easily removed without the need to do this. Some (not for erectile dysfunction) are designed to allow limited blood return, such as by hard beads that cause the ring to roll back and forth during use, increasing circulation.
When used for extreme or total erectile dysfunction, it must be possible to fit the ring onto the erect penis immediately after an erection has been produced by the pump; this practically mandates the use of very flexible rings that can be fitted on the outside of the pump's cylinder, and slid onto the penis without removing it from the cylinder when erection has been maintained.
Cock rings must not be used by those who have cardiovascular problems, by diabetics, and by those who take any blood-thinning medications.
Some underwear for men features a pouch with an internal fabric/elastic cock ring, or "c-ring", that either slides along the penis and encircles the base of the testicles or, alternately, simply snaps around the base of the testicles to snugly--but not in a constricting way--attach the pouch to the genitals. While this type of pouch permits the wearer to "go backless," c-ring pouches can be attached to either a thong or traditional jockstrap.
Clitoral Vibrators are sex toys designed for stimulating the clitoris, to achieve sexual pleasure and orgasm. Normally clitoral vibrators are created for massaging the clitoris, and are not penetrating sex toys, although the shape of some vibrators allows for penetration and the stimulation of inner erogenous zones.
Discretion is often a useful feature for a sex toy, so clitoral vibrators that look like ordinary objects at first glance are also available. Clitoral vibrators have been designed to resemble lipsticks, mobile telephones, sponges, and many other everyday items.
While most vibrators are suitable for clitoral stimulation, there are a few distinct types of vibrator designed exclusively for this purpose:

A waterproof vibrator is a sex toy containing a waterproof mechanism which can be used underwater. The motor, batteries and other parts of this vibrator are enclosed, so underwater use is absolutely safe without the risk of damaging the mechanism or the user(s).
In most cases waterproof vibrators do not have any remote control or control panel with wires. The batteries are inserted into the unit and are activated from the base. It is a more convenient variant for escaping water leakage.
Contents[hide] |
Designed especially for using underwater, the waterproof vibrators can be also activated out of the water. It expands the range of their applications. Some waterproof vibrators can be soaked in hot water for keeping the warmth and following use out of the water.
Many users prefer to take the waterproof vibrators with them in the bathroom in order to massage their erogenous zones or just to relieve the muscle tension taking shower or lying in the hot bath tub. Waterproof vibrators are also used in the swimming pools and sea water. For better results during the use waterproof vibrators should be covered with some amount of the lubricant that is compatible with the material. It is a silicone- or oil-based lubricant, because water-based lubricants are ineffective in the water.
There are several types of the waterproof vibrators. Actually any vibrator can be manufactured waterproof for water sexual plays and pleasure. Here are the most popular waterproof vibrators that can be found in the sex shops and stores.
The user must ensure that the battery case is completely sealed, otherwise an electrocution of the vaginal wall may occur. While some may find this sensation pleasurable, it is not a safe way of reaching orgasm and may result in permanent damage.
Waterproof vibrators are made out of the following materials:

A love egg is a type of sensual vibrator that is egg or bullet shaped that can be completely inserted into the vagina or anus due to their small size. They can also be referred to as egg vibrators or bullet vibrators depending on their shape. Egg vibrators are included in the group of the small and discrete sex toys that measure 2–3 inches in length and ¾ inches in width. Though less popular than wand-shaped vibrators, they are a common sex toy and are widely available.
Contents[hide] |
The device of the love egg includes an egg- or bullet-shaped vibrating item with or without the wire. Variations include the remote control love egg, which can be activated by remote control using RF technology. There are also microchip controlled devices which can provide various patterns or irregularities in the vibration, rather than a uniform wave of vibration. For example, there can be the following patterns of vibrations: pulsating (short pulse-like vibrating sessions), escalation (vibrating motions that start with slow speed and stop abruptly), surging (mixture of pulsation and normal vibrating), etc. This effect greatly enhances the pleasure experienced by the user.
Some eggs come without the wire connecting the device with the control panel that is quite comfortable. In this case the egg should have a cord for pulling it out after use; otherwise the egg may be lodged inside the vagina. Wireless eggs are perfect for partner teasing plays.
Love eggs can be made of rubber, silicone, metal, plastic, chrome, glass and also various composite materials are now available. The most important thing for a love egg is its smooth sliding surface that is provided by the materials mentioned above. The sleeves can be made of soft pliable materials like jelly or silicone for creating the special pleasure with the contact. Materials are colored for the users' fun.
Love eggs come in several different types that are designed for multi-functional applications:
Love eggs are a versatile sex toy that can be used both by men and women. Initially love eggs have been created for external stimulation of the erogenous zones, but their shape allows also penetrating applications:
All these methods can be applied during masturbation, but they can be also used for partner love making as a part of love foreplay or during intercourse. The double egg vibrators are often applied for double stimulation of vagina and anus or anuses of both partners at the same time, or both vaginas during lesbian love making.
In addition, a love egg can be placed on (or built into) the harness of a strap-on dildo to provide the wearer of the strap-on with clitoral stimulation and pleasure.

A strap-on dildo (also strap-on, dildo harness) is a dildo designed to be worn, usually with a harness, during sexual activity.[1] Harnesses and dildos are made in a wide variety of styles, with variations in how the harness fits the wearer, how the dildo attaches to the harness, as well as various features intended to facilitate stimulation of the wearer or a sexual partner.[2][3][4]
A strap-on dildo can be used for a wide variety of sexual activities, including solo or mutual masturbation, as well as penetrative oral, anal, or vaginal sex. Sexual lubricant is often used to ease insertion.
Strap-on dildos can be used by people of any sex or gender, upon people of any sex or gender. A person who does not have a penis may use a strap-on, as may a person whose penis does not allow for penetration, whether due to size or function. A person who does not want to use their penis for penetration may instead use a strap-on; this may include some trans women. Trans men may use strap-on dildos in order to facilitate experiencing sexual activity as many biological males do. People who are genderqueer or enjoy gender-bending may use a strap-on during sex in order to enjoy related forms of gender expression. Strap-on dildos are also used in kink scenes: those involving forced feminization of a man may involve the use of a strap-on upon that man, while those involving orgasm denial may involve a man using a strap-on upon a partner, to limit the amount of sexual stimulation which that man receives.
Contents[hide] |
The first part of a strap-on setup is the harness, which connects the dildo to the wearer's body, usually in a position similar to that of a male's genitals. A good harness should be sturdy yet comfortable, and is often designed to provide stimulation for the wearer. Many types of harnesses are available, with different features and drawbacks. Some dildos do not need a harness or are built onto one; for these, please see the sections on dildo types and dildo attachment methods.
A 2-strap harness, in its most basic form, is similar to a g-string. One strap goes around the wearer's waist, like a belt, while the other goes between the wearer's legs and connects to the other strap in the middle at the lower back. While these are simple, many people find them uncomfortable because to the strap rubs against the anus and other areas, and they sometimes do not hold the dildo very firmly, causing it to sag, flop, or twist.
Three-strap harnesses have one strap around the wearer's waist, but instead of one strap between the legs, they have two straps, one around each thigh, rejoining the first strap near the front. This design leaves the genitals and anus uncovered, and attaches the dildo more firmly, giving the wearer more control. Not all people find this design comfortable, and sometimes they are difficult to fit properly, and tend to slip.
Strap-on harnesses built into various clothing items are available, most often as a corset or other item of lingerie. Some are designed to be worn underneath normal clothing for quick use (if done with the dildo in place, either to give the appearance of a penis or to be able to quickly initiate intercourse, this is sometimes called packing), while others take advantage of the additional strength and sturdiness an item of clothing can provide over a few straps, or just to integrate the strap-on into an erotic outfit.
Harnesses are not limited to the crotch, and indeed many types are available for other body parts. A popular one is a thigh harness, which attaches a dildo to the wearer's thigh (or other part of the legs or arms, though this is much less common), allowing for many unique positions, as penetration is no longer limited to what could be done with a penis. Another unusual design attaches a dildo to the chin of the wearer, allowing vaginal penetration while performing cunnilingus. Also, an additional design is a gag-style harness, in which a gag is inserted into the wearer's mouth and a dildo protrudes at the other end.
Harnesses are available to attach dildos to just about any household object, allowing for many creative uses. A dildo could be attached to a chair, bed, or any other item of furniture, and penetrate someone during other activities, with or without a partner. Another item, while not technically a harness, but worth mentioning, is an inflatable ball, usually 9 to 18 inches (250 to 500 mm) diameter, made of sturdy rubber designed to support the weight of one or two people, with an attachment for a dildo on it. This allows many unique positions, such as double penetration for a woman by lying face down on the ball for vaginal penetration while her partner penetrates her anally doggy style, which is much more effective than a solid object due to the "bounce" of the ball. These inflatable balls are also quite popular for solo use.
Harnesses are available in many different materials, and the choice of which to use depends greatly on individual preference.
Nylon webbing and soft foam-like synthetic leather are common, relatively affordable, and very durable. Synthetic harnesses are relatively easy to clean and require relatively little maintenance. Some, such as the Spare Parts harness, are machine-washable.
Leather is comfortable and adjusts to the wearer's body, but still is strong. Leather is harder to clean and requires more work to maintain than other materials.
Cloth is used mostly for clothing harnesses such as corsets and other lingerie, although is occasionally used by extremely inexpensive harnesses, which are often uncomfortable or useless. Construction of lingerie harnesses is similar to most normal items of clothing, although they may use substantially thicker material to give the strength needed to support a dildo firmly.
Some harnesses are made with soft plastic, such as flexible vinyl. These are often available in unique colors, such as completely transparent, which is not possible with other materials. The downside is they are possibly less comfortable than other materials, and may be difficult to make fit well, however they tend to be very easy to clean and reasonably rugged.
Latex harnesses usually cover the entire area, rather than just using straps. They tend to be medium-priced, and have a limited lifespan, especially if used with oil-based lubricants. Latex can require much care, such as special cleaners or shiners to keep it from turning dry and dusty. Latex harnesses may or may not have the dildo(s) molded as part of the harness, and in either case, they tend to be floppy due to the flexibility of the latex. Similar harnesses are also available made of rubber or PVC, and are similar to latex harnesses, although PVC tends to be much less flexible and elastic.
The most noticeable feature of any strap-on setup is the dildo used. A wide variety of dildos are available, and while the choices may be limited by the type of harness in use, generally one can choose from several common types. This section discusses the shape and features of the penetrating end of the dildo, not of the entire dildo or how it's attached, which can be found in the section on dildo attachment methods for the double dildo and strapless dildo.
The "standard" dildo has a non-tapered or slightly tapered shaft, and often has an enlarged head, similar to a penis. The shaft may be slightly curved, but if it is strongly curved, it is often classified as a g-spot/prostate dildo as well. This type is by far the most popular, both for vaginal and anal use, although some beginners prefer a probe type dildo. Depending on the type of harness the dildo is meant for, it may have molded testicles as part of the base, which many people say gives more pleasure and helps keep the dildo from "bottoming out." Standard dildos are the most common by a large margin, and are available in virtually any length and width, material, texture, etc.
A probe dildo is often highly tapered, and many resemble a cone in overall shape, or may have a narrow diameter its entire length, although ones resembling an elongated butt plug are also common, their defining feature being a bulb in the middle which tapers down again towards the harness before flaring wider. These dildos are often advertised as being for beginners, especially newcomers to pegging, who may find a narrow, tapered dildo easier to start with if they have never had anal penetration before. Many people find that once they are familiar with the activity, the probe dildos are inadequate and unsatisfying, and purchase a standard dildo to use with their harness. Due to this, many kits include both a probe dildo and a standard dildo, so it is not necessary to purchase another.
Dildos designed for g-spot or prostate stimulation often have a sharp upwards curve at the head, or gradual but still strong curvature the entire length. When used in many sexual positions, the curve causes strong pressure against the g-spot in women or the prostate in men. Some men report that strong prostate stimulation is important for an anal orgasm, while others report it as a distraction rather than a help. When using one of these dildos for the first time, care should be taken at first to make sure it's comfortable for the receiver, as the strong bend can be difficult to insert or control. For many positions, such as doggy style, the curved tip should point downwards, as otherwise it points in the wrong direction for either g-spot or prostate stimulation.
For added stimulation, many dildos for harness use are manufactured with bulbs along their length, or having ripples, bumps, or other shapes on the surface to increase the stimulation given to the receiver. A bulbous dildo causes repeated expansion of the vaginal opening when used for vaginal penetration or of the anus when used for anal penetration, and causes a unique pulsating effect and additional stimulation. Ripples along the length of the dildo increase friction and cause a washboard effect, which some people find increases their pleasure, while others find tend to cause numbness. Individual bumps or a water droplet texture on the shaft also causes extra stimulation, and often avoids the washboard effect of evenly spaced ripples. Some dildos modeled to be realistic penises contain very heavy vein textures on the surface, causing a similar effect.
Some dildos, especially recent ones, may have rotating beads along the shaft, a wiggling shaft, vibrating ticklers or other clitoral stimulation devices, or other features to give more pleasure to the user. While their effectiveness is a matter of opinion, they are becoming increasingly popular. An inexpensive design is basically a standard rabbit vibrator designed for harness use (often the exact same toy with a slightly different base), while more expensive dildos are designed from the ground-up for harness use and are usually superior. Rotating beads provide extra stimulation of the vulva and vaginal opening when used for vaginal penetration or stimulation of the anus when used for anal penetration, while the various clitoral stimulation devices are generally intended only for vaginal intercourse. These dildos are often bulky or heavy, and like all other vibrators need a power source (usually batteries in a pack that clips onto the harness or slips into a pocket on it), but can provide additional stimulation for those who desire it.
Double penetration dildos are generally two dildos molded onto a common base, designed for simultaneous vaginal and anal penetration, not to be confused with a man using a strap-on along with his penis for double penetration, which is discussed below. A typical double-penetration dildo has a longer, thicker main shaft for vaginal penetration, and a shorter, thinner, often more curved shaft for anal penetration, although while rare, dildos with the anal shaft being equally as large as the vaginal shaft are available for women who find a larger anal dildo more satisfying. These dildos tend to greatly limit the possible positions they're used in, as the angle has to be right for both vaginal and anal penetration when thrusting, however they can provide a unique experience for couples to try.
Many specialty dildos are available, such as ones that expand when an attached inflator bulb is squeezed, ejaculate warm water on demand by compressing a reservoir, or function as enema nozzles, allowing an enema to be given while using the strap-on for anal intercourse. Inflatable dildos generally expand in girth when inflated (they usually come with a simple hand-squeeze inflator bulb), allowing the dildo to keep expanding during intercourse as the receiver slowly stretches, giving a unique completely filled feeling which is hard to obtain using normal dildos. Ejaculating dildos contain a squeeze bulb or other reservoir, which when filled with hot water beforehand, allows the wearer to "come" into the receiver at the proper moment. Enema nozzle dildos contain tubing connections, and when used for anal penetration (most often with silicone lube, as water soluble lube would quickly break down when combined with an enema) allow the receiver to receive an enema during intercourse. Some BDSM mistresses specialize in offering this service. A relatively new product in this field is dildos with electrodes for erotic electrostimulation, further increasing the range of sensations the receiver can experience.
Hollow dildos are often sold as penis extensions, but the most common use is for men with erectile dysfunction. The penis is inserted into the hollow inside of the dildo, then the harness is put on, allowing the man to penetrate his partner with the dildo, the thrusting of which is transferred to his penis.
The principal feature of any strap-on setup is the attachment—the dildo used to penetrate the other partner. While there's a huge array of different dildos available, most are attached to the harness in one of several ways. All methods have tradeoffs, and many couples will have different harnesses depending on which type of dildo they want to use.
The most common means of holding the dildo to the harness is to have an opening or ring in the harness through which a wide-based dildo is inserted. Inexpensive harnesses tend to just have a round hole in the fabric or leather, while more expensive ones will use a steel or rubber ring. The advantage of this method is that dildos which fit are widely available and inexpensive, and even many dildos not meant for harness use will work in one of these harnesses, such as most dildos with testicles. The major disadvantage is the dildo is often held loosely (especially on cheap harnesses) and tends to flop downwards, and the dildo often can rotate in the harness, making it difficult or impossible to use g-spot or other shaped dildos.
Used primarily by Doc Johnson, Vac-u-lock dildos have a rippled hollow in their base, which fits onto a matching plug on the harness or other toy. Powdered lubricant is used on the plug to facilitate removal. The advantage of this design is the dildo is firmly attached and can not easily rotate, and does not tend to flop downwards or slip like ring harnesses, as well as there being a wide variety of other devices the dildos can be attached to, such as handles and inflatable balls. The disadvantage is the relatively low availability and high cost of compatible attachments. A number of brands have non-compatible clones of the vac-u-lock system, but dildos and accessories for them are virtually unavailable.
A recent design is a strapless strap-on, designed to hold itself in a woman's or man's vagina or anus with an egg-shaped bulb, and does not require the use of a harness. This differs from a double dildo, in which both ends are symmetrical, as a double dildo can not hold itself in place in one partner while penetrating the other partner. The advantages of this design is that it can be used without any preparation, making using it much more spontaneous, that it provides deep internal thrusting to both partners, and that it can be more comfortable than having to wear a possibly bulky harness. However, it has the disadvantage that it may require strong muscles to use, and it may take practice to be comfortable with one.
A double dildo can be used with or without a harness, although most provide no means of using them with a harness. A double dildo, as its name implies, is a dildo in which both ends are designed for insertion, and often is 18 inches (500 mm) or more long. While special ones meant for use with a harness do exist, a normal double dildo is straight, is rarely at a comfortable angle for intercourse, and jabs into the cervix of a woman using one. However, double dildos can be used for a variety of creative positions for which a harness would be awkward, such as both partners in doggy style positions or sitting facing each other.
Some harnesses and dildos are made of a single piece of molded latex, with the dildo permanently built into the front. These are often inexpensive, shoddy products, although higher quality ones are available. The advantages are simple use and an appearance some people find erotic, but this is often outweighed by the inability to use a different dildo, the often weak, floppy nature of the dildo, the inability to adjust to a given person for a comfortable fit, and their relatively short lifespan.
Some very cheap "strap-on dildos" have straps or attachments for straps directly molded into the material of the dildo. This design is very flimsy, and is only used on the cheapest products. They are essentially useless for the traditional purpose of a strap-on dildo (one partner penetrating another using a dildo in a position similar to a penis), but can be strapped around chairs and other objects for a variety of interesting activities.
Pleasure for the wearer of the strap-on generally comes from pressure against the genitals, particularly the clitoris, during use and from psychological arousal. Many designs of strap-on have various features to increase the stimulation of the wearer.
Some harnesses intentionally leave the genital area and anus open (either intentionally with an opening in the material or by the design simply not having any straps that would cover it), which allows any toy to be used for the stimulation of the wearer, or even for the wearer to be penetrated while wearing the strap-on. This can often be useful when the partners wish to switch roles during their play, as the strap-on can be put on before hand without interfering or needing to be taken off for play to continue. This type of harness is ill-suited for using toys, however, as the harness would not touch the toys, both preventing them from falling out while thrusting and not providing movement to them from the harness.
Some harnesses and dildos provide raised bumps or other features designed to rub against the clitoris of a female wearer, either attached to the inside of the harness, or on the back of the base of the dildo. Harnesses that work with such dildos have to have an open back, where the base of the dildo presses directly against the woman's body. As high-quality harnesses usually have padding or other means of attaching the dildo to the harness than a simple opening, these features are usually only seen on low-quality, inexpensive dildos. They provide only limited stimulation, and while better than nothing, are usually considered inferior to other types.
Another means of providing stimulation to the wearer is a vibrating egg, "clit blaster", vibrating gel pads or whiskers, or other device mounted on the inside of the strapon. These are most always intended for use by women, as the external vibrator is rarely positioned well nor provides stimulation to males. These devices provide external stimulation to the clitoris, vulva, and other parts of the vaginal opening, but do not provide any penetrative stimulation or anal stimulation.
While a double dildo obviously would provide stimulation to the wearer as well, the standard straight dildo is very poorly suited for harness use. To overcome this, many dildos are available for harness use that have an offset in the middle, with the main attachment and a smaller vaginal attachment for the wearer having a flat vertical section between them. This way, the main attachment is at a good angle and position for thrusting, while its movement is transmitted directly to the vaginal plug and clitoris of the wearer.
A special example of this is Feeldoe, Super Strapless Silicone Dildo, Share, Nexus Maximus and Transfer, which has an egg shaped bulb designed to be inserted into the vagina or anus of the wearer. Due to the shape of the dildo, thrusting on the main dildo translates to lateral movement of the plug, providing great stimulation to the wearer. Additionally, the shape of the plug allows it to be used without a harness in many instances.
Many of the "professional" harnesses have one or two plugs (vaginal, anal, or both) on the inside of the harness, to penetrate the wearer. These plugs (may be shaped either like small dildos, the standard butt plug shape, or a combination/hybrid thereof) are usually firmly attached to the harness, and provide stimulation to the wearer as he/she thrusts with the main dildo. Harnesses made for men usually only come with the anal plug, while ones for women come with both plugs, which most women report provides the most pleasure using one.
While a plug can be used in combination with most any harness, just by inserting the plugs before putting on the harness, all the harness tends to do is push the plugs in, and not move them as to provide stimulation when the wearer thrusts. Depending on the type of harness, different ways are used to properly attach plugs to the harness. A common type consists of an opening or rubber ring with a cloth or leather back, similar to what might be used to hold the main dildo to the front of the harness, but positioned over the anus, vagina, or ones for both. A dildo/plug with a wide base is inserted through the ring, then when the harness is put on, the material pulls tight against it, holding it firm. For vac-u-lock harnesses, one or two additional vac-u-lock plugs are mounted on the inside of the harness, allowing any vac-u-lock attachment to be used. Most vac-u-lock harnesses that have the connectors for internal plugs come with two plug-shaped vac-u-lock attachments, a smaller one for anal use and a larger one for vaginal use. Like other types of harnesses, both plugs may be used at once, and often are separately adjustable on the strap to fit the wearer's body.
A number of positions can be performed using a strap-on dildo. These include:
Even more than the different types of harnesses and dildos, there are different ways to make use of a strap-on setup. Generally ways of using them can be divided into several broad categories, however there are infinite variations.
Almost every position associated with "normal" sexual intercourse (or not, in the case of simultaneous penetration) can be performed with a strap-on. Indeed, with other harnesses that allow a dildo to be mounted on inanimate objects, endless new positions can be conceived.
Due to the often taboo nature of strap-on activities, information on their history is difficult to find. An 1899 report by Haberlandt documented current and historical use of double-ended dildos in Zanzibar, and is one of the few historical documents of this kind. Female-female dildo usage in ancient China has been documented, but it is not clear if this was double-dildos, strap-on dildos, or just a simple dildo being used by one woman on another. In ancient Greece, dildos were made of stone or padded leather, and some evidence shows aforementioned leather was used to make a harness as well, with olive oil used for anal penetration. A double-penetration dildo was found in ancient France, but its use is lost to time. A 19th century Chinese painting shows a woman using a dildo strapped to her shoe, showing that creative use of strap-ons was already well under way. Many artifacts from the Upper Paleolithic have been found that appear to be dildos, including a double "baton" with a hole in the middle, theorized to be for a strap to hold it to a wearer. The Kama Sutra includes mention of dildos (darshildo in Hindi) made from a wide variety of materials, and used by hand, with ties (straps), or in a harness. It is likely the history of the strap-on parallels the history of the dildo, and given the age of many discoveries, is a rather long history.

An anal vibrator is a sex toy meant for sexual stimulation of the anus. Basically, all anal vibrators have one common feature - they produce a vibrating effect in the anus for pleasurable sensations.
As other anal toys, Anal vibrators differ from other types of vibrators by having a flared base to prevent its possible loss in the rectum. The average size of Anal vibrator is smaller than vibrators intended for vaginal penetration and may vary from 4-6 inches long and about 1 inch wide. As well as other vibrators designed for external and internal stimulation, anal vibrators are usually battery operated: the batteries may be inside the unit or connected by wire to a power pack.
Unlike anal dildos, such as butt plugs, anal probes and anal beads, vibrating anal toys may produce various stimulating effects: rotating, vibrating or pulsating, and can have different speed or vibration levels to regulate and adjust the vibrator to various sensations.
Anal probes, with vibrating effect are smaller than usual butt plugs–about the size of a finger, which make them a very helpful anal toy for beginners. Anal probe vibrators may be narrower because their main function is to slide and vibrate.
Vibrating butt plugs are made to stay inside the anus to create fullness and vibrating stimulation at the same time. Their advantage is that they can be simply left in for anal stimulation during solo or partners' sex to receive multiple enhancements.
Vibrating beads and balls are a number of small beads or balls joined together through a long retrievable cord to a power control. They may not only be inserted and pulled out but also vibrate at different speeds.
G-spot vibrator is a sex toy which varies depending if it is being used by a male or female. In females, the device is built to massage the g-spot, a sensitive collection of nerves inside the vagina and in male, for massaging the prostate for both sexual and health-related reasons.

Female G-spot Vibrators
The female type is of a phallus-like shape designed especially for stimulating female g-spot - a place inside the vagina considered to be incredibly sensitive. The intense stimulation is effected due to the special form of the head that is a little curved for this purpose. The g-spot vibrator first appeared as a response to complaints that normal penis stimulation was not enough for a woman to reach vaginal orgasm. The curved structure of the g-spot vibrator made it possible to stimulate the spot without any extra effort.
Almost all female g-spot vibrators feature the phallus shape and have a specially curved ends for reaching the most hidden area of the vagina. But there can be also a group of special or exotic g-spot vibrators intended for this special zone stimulation featuring more exotic unusual shape. The head of a g-spot vibrator is mostly a little bit larger than the head of the actual penis and in average measures from 1 to 1.5 inch wide and 5-7 inches long.
Male G-spot Vibrators

The male g-spot vibrator is a specially curved device (like a skier about to take off) with a round head which is inserted into the anal canal of the male, and stimulates the prostate gland - also known as the male g-spot[citation needed] - this way, normally producing a host of different, and quite intense sexual sensations. Prostate massage is also used for health purposes, as recommended by a health professional. The male g-spot is actually the prostate gland.[citation needed] It has been found to produce some very intense sexual experiences for men, and has been used in tantric sex for centuries. Oriental culture has consistently used this practice during massage during the ages. Male g-spot massage is becoming very popular, not only for its health benefits to the prostate gland, but also for the often intense sexual pleasure. Male g-spot vibrators are specially shaped to fit snugly into the rectum, vibrating the anal canal, perineum, and prostate gland to 'milk' the prostate, removing most or all the fluid inside this important gland. The male g-spot vibrators normally come without the vibrating function, but this is an added extra in some models for extra sexual pleasure. The Nexus Vibro is one such device used for stimulating the male g-spot, or, prostate massage.
Female g-spot vibrator touches the g-spot by its curved end delivering the vibrating sensations to that area. The level of penetration varies greatly from one woman to another, since the physiology is not the same in different individuals. The effect of any g-spot stimulation is also enhanced by stimulation of other erogenous zones at the same moment: clitoris, labia, anus, etc. The structure of some g-spot vibrators includes clitoris or anus stimulators.
G-spot vibrators as any other vibrators are usually manufactured from the soft pliable materials that provide the pleasant touch: silicone, jelly, rubber and their combinations.
Rabbit vibrator (also known as a Jack Rabbit vibrator or Jessica Rabbit vibrator) is a vibrating and rotating sex toy made in the shape of a phallus with a clitoral stimulator attached to the shaft. The name of the device is derived from the fact that the clitoral stimulator looks like a pair of rabbit ears. In the history of sex toys, Rabbit Vibrators appeared relatively recently, within the last decade, in response to the growing female demand for more pleasurable sex toys and gained additional notoriety after it was the star guest in an episode of HBO's TV series Sex and the City (season 1, episode 9 featuring Vibratex's Rabbit Pearl. Rabbit Vibrators are designed to give more intense sensations than the more traditional dildo or clitoral stimulator, since they are designed for simultaneous vaginal and clitoral stimulation. The device can be used for solo pleasure or as part of partner sex.

Normally Rabbit Vibrators are made out of a jelly-like substance (poly vinyl chloride), silicone (semi-organic polymer), rubber (elastic hydrocarbon polymer) or latex (natural rubber) materials. Their soft and pliable texture makes them ideal for intimate use. Silicone vibrators are easier to clean and care for, since this material is not porous, therefore no bacteria or foreign matter is absorbed by the toy. Silicone retains heat and has no odor. Jelly material is porous and cannot be sterilized in boiling water and has a scent of rubber that some find unappealing. In order to escape this smell some producers aromatize the products with more pleasurable scents. Rabbit Vibrators made from vinyl, plastic, metal, elastomer materials can be also found. They are much less porous than jelly, or non-porous at all, but the texture is smooth and firm.
Various manufacturers have been looking for more suitable materials to respond to customer demand for more pleasurable and safer materials. Recent research in this field has helped to create such patented materials as Crystalessence (thermo plastic rubber), Futurotic (thermoplastic elastomer), Jel-Lee (poly vinyl chloride), AquaGel (poly vinyl chloride), SoftSkins (thermal plastic elastomer) and some others.
Rabbit Vibrators have been designed for simultaneous internal (vaginal) and external (clitoral) stimulation. The rabbit-shaped stimulator is positioned against the clitoris (or anus), while the shaft is inserted into the vagina. Due to the fact that the popularity among many women is growing to simply use the rabbit for clitoral stimulation, one may find to this end that a number of newer 'rabbit' style toys are being manufactured which simply consist of the vibrating bunny ears without a penetrative shaft. However, dual-action vibe and clitoral Rabbit stimulators maintain to be among todays best online selling sex toys. They normally offer a choice between two shaft rotation speeds and two patterns of clitoral stimulation, or allow the user to enjoy both functions at the same time.
Rabbit Vibrators can also be used for anal stimulation, and can therefore be used by men as well. (To maintain good hygiene, it is highly recommended that toys used anally be covered with a condom before use. A new condom should be applied each time it is swapped between anal and vaginal use. Ideally users should have separate toys for both anal and vaginal use. The same rules apply to sharing toys with different sexual partners: use a condom on anything porous, wash before and after use and between different sexual partners.)
While using a Rabbit Vibrator, users may well benefit from using additional lubrication, as jelly can absorb the body's natural lubrication, and both jelly and silicone create friction against skin, and lack of moisture may cause irritation, discomfort or pain. Some vibrators come supplied with a suitable lubricant.
A sex shop, erotic shop is a shop that sells products such as sex toys, pornography, erotic lingerie, erotic books, and safe sex products such as condoms and dental dams. The euphemisms "Adult Video Store" and "Adult Book Store" are commonly used to refer to sex shops that sell or rent pornographic videos, books, and magazines. However, many adult films are not rated when released to video or DVD.
In most jurisdictions, sex shops are regulated by law, with access not permitted to minors, the age depending on local law. Some states/countries prohibit sex shops and the merchandise they sell, e.g. many Muslim countries as well as a few US states. In some jurisdictions that permit it, they may also show pornographic movies in private booths, or have private striptease or peep shows.
Near borders of countries with different laws regarding sex shops, shops on the more liberal side tend to be popular with customers from the other side, especially if importing the purchased materials by customers to their own country, and possessing them, is legal or tolerated.[citation needed] In 1962 Beate Uhse AG opened the world's first sex shop in Flensburg, Germany.
There are effectively two different models of sex shops in the United Kingdom. As the Video Recordings Act was rendered null and void by a legal oversight and Parliament have made no decision as yet on how to replace it, the R18 category has no legal meaning: any shop or mail order company may supply R18 DVDs to any person (even a minor.) However as this Act was mistakenly enforced for many years the result has been two separate types of erotic store: shops such as Ann Summers which offer lingerie and a small selection of sex toys along with soft pornography and in some cases non-adult items; and licenced sex shops which specialise in the supply of hardcore pornography.
Almost all licenced adult stores in the UK are forbidden from having their wares in open shop windows, which means often the shop fronts are boarded up or covered in posters. A warning sign must be clearly shown at the entrance to the store, and no sex articles(ie pornography or sex toys) should be visible from the street however lingerie, non-offensive covers of adult material etc. may be shown depending on the license conditions of the local authority. No customer can be under eighteen years old.
There are also many online sex shops, selling a variety of adult content such as toys, fetish wear etc. These types of shop are often favoured by the consumer as they have less overheads and can be perused within the comfort of your own home.
Sex shops in Scotland are regulated under the Civic Government (Scotland) Act 1982.
Until recently sex shops in Ireland have been small, low profile establishments although the restrictions on such shops are not nearly as tight as the UK.
In the United States, a series of Supreme Court decisions in the 1960s (based on the First Amendment to the United States Constitution) generally legalized sex shops, while still allowing states and local jurisdictions to limit them through zoning. Into the 1980s, nearly all American sex shops were oriented to an almost entirely male clientele. Many included booths for viewing pornographic film loops (later videos), and nearly all were designed so that their customers could not be seen from the street: they lacked windows, and the doors often involved an L-shaped turn so that people on the street could not see in.
While that type of store continues to exist, since the end of the 1970s there has been an evolution in the industry. Two new types of stores arose in that period, both of them often (though not always, especially not in more socially conservative communities) more open to the street and more welcoming to women than the older stores.
The 1990s also saw the birth of the sex "superstores," some of them with over 10,000 square feet (930 m2) in area.
The first sex shop to open in Canada was Stag Shop, which opened in Waterloo, Ontario in 1972. Hundreds of sex shops have since opened across the country. There are no specific laws against using or buying sex toys at basically any age, however there are laws about pornography. Although the age of consent is 16 in Canada, you have to be 18+ to purchase or view pornography. Most sex shops carry adult videos, meaning that most sex toys remain strictly in the hands of adults.
Many sex shops in Canada are now selling more eco-friendly sex toys which are free of phthalates. Phthalates are known to cause endocrine disorders, testicle malfunction and cancer. Even though there are a number of popular Canadian websites for purchasing sex toys, brick and mortar sex stores are still the bread and butter of the industry in Canada. Also becoming popular in Canada are sex toy parties, which are a similar idea to the tupperware parties of the 1980s, only with sex toys.
The first sex shop in Italy was opened in 1972 in Milan by Masia Angela and her husband Ercole Sabbatini. This was the first "official" sex shop. Since then Italy has become overrun with sex shops, mostly in Rome. It is known as Sex Shop Citta' di Milano. This store faced opposition from conservative segments of the Italian population, and was closed several times by the police. Its establishment marked a turning point in Italian mores, however, and today many more sex shops have opened in the country.
In Japan, the sex shops contain hentai magazines, adult videos and DVDs.
The Fleshlight (also marketed as the Fleshjack) is a line of male sex toys. The Fleshlight is designed and marketed by Interactive Life Forms (ILF).[1] The Fleshlight is named for the flesh-like material used in its inner sleeve, as well as the plastic case that houses the sleeve, which is fashioned to look like an oversized flashlight. The inner sleeve is available with vagina, anus, buttocks, mouth and a more discreet slot-shaped orifice (stealth). All inner sleeves also come in a choice of various colors and internal textures. The Fleshlight was designed by former police officer (and SWAT team member) Steven A. Shubin who was going through forced abstinence while his wife was in a high-risk pregnancy.[2] He was granted a patent in 1998 for his invention, as a "device for discreet sperm collection".[3] Contents [hide] * 1 Material * 2 Recent products * 3 References * 4 External links [edit] Material The Fleshlight is stated to be made of medical and food grade, phthalate-free polymers.[4] According to the Fleshlight website, the insert is not made from latex, plastic or silicone. The Fleshlight FAQ [5] claims the material is "a company secret covered by a series of US patents" but according to the patent itself (which is public), the material is an elastomeric gel being formed from a mixture of 90–94% by weight of plasticizing oil and of 5–9% by weight of a block copolymer comprising an admixture of a styrene ethylene butylene styrene block copolymer and a styrene ethylene propylene styrene block copolymer combined in a ratio of 1:5 to 5:1. Due to the chemical composition of this material, it is only suitable for use with water-based lubricants, as oil-based lubricants or soaps will damage the material permanently. [edit] Recent products The Fleshjack brand was launched in April 2007. Fleshjack is essentially the same as a Fleshlight, but specifically targeted toward the gay male demographic.[6] A mold shaped from Spunky Productions' Paris was introduced into the Fleshlight Girls (FLG) line in September 2008 in an attempt to underscore their newest textured sleeve to be released, the "Lotus". Along with the Lotus, ILF launched a new website for the FLG page featuring a Member's Lounge for V.I.P. pictures and videos of all eight models featured on the site.[7]
Vibrators are devices intended to vibrate against the body and stimulate the nerves for a relaxing and pleasurable feeling. Some vibrators are designed to be inserted in a body cavity for erotic stimulation.
History |
A clockwork powered vibrator, known as the trémoussoir, was devised in France in 1734 [1] by the Abbé St. Pierre[2].
The electrically powered vibrator was invented in the 1880s by Kelsey Stinner to treat what was then called "congestion of the genitalia" and "female hysteria".[citation needed] For centuries, doctors had been treating women for these illnesses by performing what we would now recognize as masturbation. However, not only did they regard the "vulvular stimulation" required as having nothing to do with sex, but reportedly found it time-consuming and hard work.[2]
Then, in 1902, the American company Hamilton Beach patented the first electric vibrator available for retail sale, making the vibrator the fifth domestic appliance to be electrified, after the sewing machine, fan, tea kettle, and toaster, and about a decade before the vacuum cleaner and electric iron.[3]
The home versions soon became extremely popular, with advertisements in periodicals such as Needlecraft, Woman's Home Companion, Modern Priscilla, and the Sears, Roebuck catalog. These disappeared in the 1920s, apparently because their appearance in pornography made it no longer tenable for polite society to avoid the sexual connotations of the devices.
Since the 1980s, vibrators and sex toys have become more visible in mainstream public culture, with the opening of new “sex stores” such as Condom Nation in New York City and Good Vibrations in San Francisco, as well as a landmark “vibrator” discussion on the HBO show Sex and the City.
Vibrators often allow people to achieve orgasm rapidly and with relative ease as compared to other methods. In addition, vibrators are reported[who?] to provide stronger orgasms than those produced by manual stimulation alone. They are often recommended by sex therapists for women who have difficulty reaching orgasm by other means[citation needed]. Couples also use them sometimes as an enhancement to the pleasure of one or both partners.
Some vibrators are marketed as "body massagers" — although they still may be used, like the ones sold as adult sex toys, for autoeroticism. Some vibrators run on batteries while others have a power cord that plugs in to a wall socket. There is also a vibrator that uses the flow of air from a vacuum cleaner to stimulate the clitoris.
Modern versions of old musical vibrators synchronize the vibrations to music from a music player or a cellphone.
There is an enormous range of vibrators but most of them fall into several broad categories:
Disabled people can find that vibrators are an essential part of their sex life for two reasons: First, it might be the only way to get sexual satisfaction due to impaired arm and hand function.[4] Second, for some disabled men, the use of a vibrator is their only way to provide a semen sample to become fathers.[4]
Vibrators are vibrating devices intended to pleasurably stimulate various parts of the body. Vibrators intended for sexual use are often dildo-shaped, although they also come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, allowing internal and external use.
Glass sex toys are commonly made from clear medical grade borosilicate glass ("hard glass") of which Pyrex is a brand. This material (essentially "lead-free crystal") is completely non-toxic and will withstand extreme temperatures as well as physical shock without compromising its structural integrity. Glass toys made of borosilicate are completely safe. A properly annealed inch thick piece will withstand up to 3,000 lbs of pressure and extreme heat and cold. Glass dildos are also non-porous and can be sterilized to help prevent infection with reuse. These types of sex toys are not only durable, but also visually appealing, often considered by some to resemble works of art. Glass sex toys are a long lasting alternative to less expensive toys. The toy can be heated or chilled before use. Some higher end glass dildos feature Swarovski crystals. Other toys are covered in 24-carat gold.
Butt plugs are usually used covered by condoms for hygiene, and to allow for the easy disposal of any feces that they may come in contact with. They should not be shared with other people, due to the risk of blood-borne diseases, including HIV that can arise from the transfer of body fluids from one person to another. These should also never be used to stimulate any area other than the rectum, though they often are.
There are butt plugs that "ejaculate" by squirting water or other viscous fluids into the rectum. There are also vibrating butt plugs, butt plugs that can inflate and expand, and butt plugs with rotating beads and thrusting functions. Butt plugs can be moved in or out for pleasure; for this type of activity ribbed butt plugs can increase pleasure. They can also be worn continuously (or be lockable) for long periods of time.
Danish retailers report that they often lack information about the composition of sex toys that they sell.[3] A recent (2006) study conducted by the Greenpeace Netherlands office found high level of phthalates in seven out of eight plastic sex toys tested.[4]
Several countries have enacted laws to ban or curb the use of sex toys.
Sex toys and lubricants have become increasingly available in major commercial outlets in the United States. On-shelf displays tend to be more discreet than the offerings on web sites. These items tend to be displayed in the "sexual health" sections of stores.[5]
Until recently, many Southern and some Great Plains states banned the sale of sex toys completely, either directly or through laws regulating "obscene devices."[6] In 1999, William H. Pryor, Jr., an assistant attorney general in Alabama commenting on a case involving sex toys and discussing to what end the devices are used, was quoted as saying there is no "fundamental right for a person to buy a device to produce orgasm". A federal appeals court upheld Alabama's law prohibiting the sale of sex toys on Valentine's Day, 2007.[7] The law, the Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act of 1998, was also upheld by the Alabama Supreme Court on September 11, 2009.[8]
In February 2008, a federal appeals court overturned a Texas statute banning the sales of sex toys, deeming such a statute as violating the Constitution's 14th Amendment on the right to privacy.[9] The appeals court cited Lawrence v. Texas, where the U.S. Supreme Court in 2003 struck down bans on consensual sex between gay couples, as unconstitutionally aiming at "enforcing a public moral code by restricting private intimate conduct." Similar statutes have been struck down in Colorado, Kansas and Colorado. As of 2009, Alabama is the only state where a law prohibiting the sale of sex toys remain on the books.[10]
Sex toys are outlawed in India. Despite a ban, they are widely available at Fort in Mumbai, and Palika Bazaar in Delhi. Toys include vibrators and strap-on dildos. The most popular items are inflatable dolls. Sex toys in India find mention in Vatsyayana's magnum-opus, the Kama Sutra, where there are references to apadravyas (dildos), and life-size pratimas (wooden figures) used in the sexual act are mentioned. Experts such as Dr Prakash Kothari, professor of sexual medicine at Mumbai's KEM Hospital, questions the ban on sex toys, calling it "pseudo-moralistic."[11] The surreptitious market value for sex toys in India is valued at Rs. 500 crore (US$ 103 million).[citation needed]
Some Conservative Christians believe that the use of sex toys is immoral and prohibited by The Bible. An American Baptist preacher, Dan Ireland, has been an outspoken critic of such devices and has fought to ban them on religious and ethical grounds. According to Ireland, "Sometimes you have to protect the public against themselves....These devices should be outlawed because they are conducive to promiscuity, because they promote loose morals and because they entice improper and potentially deadly behaviors."[12] Ireland believes that "there is no moral way to use one of these devices."[13]
An American bioethicist and medical historian, Jacob M. Appel has argued that sex toys are actually a "social good" and that the devices, which he refers to as "marital substitutes," play "an important role in the emotional lives of millions of Americans."[14] Appel has written:
I cannot say whether more Alabama women own vibrators than own Bibles. If I were guessing, I would suspect that a majority derive more use out of the vibrators. Certainly more pleasure. Nor does there appear to be any remotely rational basis for keeping sex toys out of the hands of married adults, or single adults, or even children. Now that we are relatively confident that masturbation does not make little girls go blind, or cause palms to sprout hair, exposure to sex toys shouldn't harm them. On the list of items that I might not want children to be exposed to in stores--guns, matches, poisons, junk food--sex toys are way down the list.[15]
Dr. Marty Klein, author of America's War on Sex and an advocate for the moral value of sex toys, has written of sex toy bans that this "extraordinary erosion of personal liberty, coupled with the massive disrespect of and fear of sexuality is no joke" and that the "Supreme Court [of the United States] has declared our orgasms a battlefield, and sex toys another casualty."[16]
Globally, the sex toy industry is valued at USD 15 billion, with a growth rate of 30%.[11] 70% of sex toys are manufactured in China.[11]
